„Caledonia“ handelt von Schottlands gescheitertem Kolonialversuch. In den 1690ern träumte der schottische Banker William Paterson davon, eine schottische Kolonie im südlichen Panama zu errichten, um Schottland zu einer Kolonialmacht zu machen. Er überzeugte die schottische Öffentlichkeit davon, große Geldsummen in den Plan zu investieren, doch seine Umsetzung endete in einer Katastrophe für das stolze schottische Volk. Caledonia is the story of Scotland’s failed colonial venture. In the 1690s, a Scottish banker called William Paterson dreamed of establishing a Scottish colony on the isthmus of Panama, hoping that it would transform Scotland into a great economic power. He convinced the Scottish public to pour huge investments into the plan; the project, however, ended in disaster. The Darién scheme, as it is known, left Scotland in financial straits and accelerated its signing of the 1707 Treaty of Union with England, ending its independent status.
Part historical drama and part tragedy, Caledonia explores themes of corruption, delusion, and failed ambition relevant to contemporary audiences, infused with a dark satirical humour. Central to the play is human fallibility: the characters’ hopes, expectations, and competing interests clash against each other as they chase dreams of glory. As Alastair Beaton writes, Caledonia is simultaneously “a Scottish story, an international story, an ancient story, and a modern story.”
