Etwas ist faul im Staate Salem. Seit Reverend Parris die Jugendlichen seiner gottesfürchtigen Gemeinde bei einem Geheim-Treffen erwischte, spielt die Phantasie der braven Bürger verrückt. Eine Verschwörung scheint im Busch zu sein. Ein Angriff auf die Gesellschaft steht bevor. Den willkommenen Beweis für die Unredlichkeit einiger Bürger liefern schließlich die Behauptungen eines Teenagers. Das geltungssüchtige Mädchen Abigail gibt an, die subversiven Elemente im Ort ausfindig machen zu können. Die öffentliche Ordnung ist in Gefahr. Angst und Misstrauen schaukeln sich immer weiter hoch. Bald schon ist das beste Mittel für die eigene saubere Weste der Fingerzeig auf den Nachbarn und das Vertrauen in das Wohlwollen der Obrigkeit. Aber lange noch nicht alle, die ein Geheimnis für sich behalten wollen, sind auch wirklich Feinde der öffentlichen Ordnung...

Arthur Millers "The Crucible" verarbeitet die tatsächlichen Ereignisse um den Hexenprozess im neuenglischen Salem aus dem Jahr 1692. Als Parabel über die Verfolgung von Kommunisten in der McCarthy Ära der USA geschrieben, ist das Stück ein Meisterwerk über die Psychologie der Massenhysterie und den damit einhergehenden Folgen. Gerade diese Thematik macht es in allen Zeiten aktuell, in denen die Gefahren für die Gesellschaft überall lauern können und es so scheint, als ob die Aufgabe persönlicher Rechte der Ausweg ist, um die Sicherheit wieder herzustellen. Die maniACTs versetzen Arthur Millers Stück über die Instrumentalisierung öffentlicher Angst in eine Welt, die nach dem 11. September niemals wieder so sein sollte, wie sie einmal war.

Die maniACTs sind die Theatergruppe des Englischen Seminars der Universität Freiburg und bilden sich jedes Semester neu. Die Gruppe besteht fast ausschließlich aus Studenten, von denen einige bereits viel Bühnenerfahrung mitbringen.

Ever since Reverend Parris stumbled in on a secret meeting of the young people of his god-fearing town, rumours of conspiracy have been running wild among the honest townsfolk. Something is foul in the state of Salem. Welcome evidence that the public order is under attack comes in the form of the attention-craving Abigail. The teenage girl claims to have the means of identifying all the conspirators. As the fear of an enemy within is rising higher and a muttered accusation is enough to rouse suspicion, the best way to stay out of trouble seems to be keeping a keen eye on ones neighbours and to trust in the benevolence of the authorities. However, not all of those keeping a secret are necessarily enemies of the public order...

Arthur Miller wrote "The Crucible" based on the true account of a witch-hunt in New England in 1692 as a parable on the hunt on communists of the McCarthy era in the USA. It is a masterpiece on the psychology of mass hysteria and its consequences - a play that is of ever current interest at all times when the threats against society are both manifold and difficult to perceive and the only way to regain control seems to lie in the relinquishing of individual freedom. The maniACTs production takes Miller's story of the exploitation of public fear and transfers it into a world that many never wanted to be the same again after 9/11.
